How to Ship a Package from Indonesia to Canada (2026 Guide)
Canada has one of the lowest de-minimis thresholds among developed economies — just CAD 20 for most postal and commercial imports. Unlike shipments from the US or Mexico, Indonesian packages do not benefit from CUSMA courier thresholds. Above CAD 20, you face MFN customs duty, 5% federal GST, and provincial tax that varies by destination. This guide covers the honest numbers: shipping rates from $46, 4–18 day delivery, the full tax breakdown by province, why Indonesia has no GPT duty preference, and what to do when your Canadian card is declined on Tokopedia. See our Canada shipping page for real-time rates and Personal Shopper service.
Why Canada is a Key IndoShip Market
Canada has a growing Indonesian diaspora — professionals, students, and families concentrated in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal. Indonesian food (sambal, kecap manis, rendang) and products (batik, coffee, skincare) are in steady demand, especially through Indonesian grocery stores and online communities.
The demand is real and specific. The most popular items shipped from Indonesia to Canada:
- • Indonesian groceries (sambal, kecap manis, krupuk)
- • Indonesian coffee (Gayo, Toraja, Luwak)
- • Batik and traditional textiles
- • Skincare and beauty products (Wardah, Somethinc)
- • Herbal and jamu products
- • Indonesian snacks and instant noodles
While some Indonesian products are available in Canadian Asian grocery stores, the selection is limited and prices are high. Direct import from Indonesia offers better variety, authenticity, and value — especially for niche items like specific sambal brands or specialty coffee.
Estimated Shipping Cost to Canada (2026)

| Component | Cost (estimate) |
|---|---|
| Items purchased | ~$20 |
| Personal Shopper fees (if used) | ~$7 |
| Shipping (Pos Indonesia EMS, 1kg) | from $46 |
| Customs duty (MFN rate if > CAD 20) | Varies by HS code |

Delivery Time by Courier
Canada is a long-haul destination from Indonesia. All four couriers serve the route, with express options offering 4–8 day delivery. Economy EMS takes longer but is the most affordable for heavy, non-urgent packages.
| Courier | Delivery (estimate) | From (1kg) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pos Indonesia EMS | 10–18 days | ~$46 | Food, personal care, budget shipments |
| DHL Express | 4–7 days | See the calculator | Urgent items; customs pre-clearance |
Customs clearance note: Express couriers like DHL typically handle customs pre-clearance, which can speed up the process at the Canadian border. Economy shipments (Pos Indonesia EMS) may require the recipient to interact with Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) or the carrier for duty/tax payment before final delivery.
Canadian Customs Duty, GST/HST/PST & the Low De-Minimis
Canada has one of the lowest de-minimis thresholds among developed economies. Understanding the three layers of charges — duty, federal GST, and provincial tax — is essential for budgeting your shipment.
CAD 20 De-Minimis — Very Low Threshold
Canada's de-minimis threshold is CAD 20 for most postal and commercial imports. At or below CAD 20, no duty or tax is collected. Bona-fide gifts sent by mail have a higher threshold of CAD 60. This is one of the lowest de-minimis levels among developed economies — for comparison, Australia is AUD 1,000 and the US was USD 800 (before the 2025 changes).
In practice: almost every IndoShip package to Canada exceeds CAD 20 in declared value, so budget for duty and taxes on every shipment.
CUSMA Courier Thresholds — Do NOT Apply to Indonesia
The CUSMA (Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement) provides higher courier Low-Value-Shipment thresholds: CAD 40 (no duty or tax) and CAD 150 (no duty; tax applies). However, these thresholds apply only to goods that last entered commerce in the United States or Mexico.
Goods of Indonesian origin do NOT qualify. Shipments from Indonesia remain under Canada's standard CAD 20 de-minimis. The CUSMA thresholds are irrelevant for direct Indonesia-to-Canada shipments.
Above De-Minimis: Duty + GST + Provincial Tax
Above CAD 20, three charges apply:
- • Customs duty at the MFN (Most-Favoured-Nation) rate for your product's HS code. Rates vary by product category.
- • 5% federal GST calculated on the customs value plus any applicable duty.
- • Provincial tax by destination — see the province-by-province breakdown below.
Provincial Tax Breakdown (2026)
The provincial tax component varies by destination province. HST provinces combine federal GST and provincial tax into a single rate; PST-separate provinces add their own tax on top of the 5% GST:
| Province / Territory | Tax Type | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | HST | 13% |
| Nova Scotia | HST | 15% |
| New Brunswick | HST | 15% |
| Newfoundland & Labrador | HST | 15% |
| Prince Edward Island | HST | 15% |
| British Columbia | GST + PST | 5% + 7% = 12% |
| Saskatchewan | GST + PST | 5% + 6% = 11% |
| Manitoba | GST + PST | 5% + 7% = 12% |
| Quebec | GST + QST | 5% + 9.975% = 14.975% |
| Alberta | GST only | 5% |
| Yukon / NWT / Nunavut | GST only | 5% |
No GPT Duty Preference for Indonesia
Canada's General Preferential Tariff (GPT) provides reduced duty rates for eligible developing countries. However, Indonesia was removed from Canada's GPT under the 2013 review, effective 1 January 2015. Indonesia was not reinstated in the 2023 review, which renewed the GPT to 31 December 2034 for other eligible countries.
What this means: Indonesian goods face standard MFN (Most-Favoured-Nation) tariff rates when entering Canada. There is no duty preference, no reduced rate, and no GPT benefit for shipments from Indonesia. Budget for full MFN duty above the CAD 20 de-minimis.
DDU Shipping — Recipient Pays on Arrival
IndoShip ships DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid). This means the recipient in Canada is responsible for paying any applicable duty, GST, and provincial tax to the carrier or Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) before final delivery. Express couriers typically notify the recipient by email with a payment link; Canada Post (EMS) may hold the package and send a delivery notice card.
Prohibited & Restricted Items
Canada enforces strict import controls through the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Misdeclaration or undervaluation can result in seizure, penalties, and future inspection flags.
High Risk — Avoid or Check First
- • Meat and meat-derived products (CFIA restrictions)
- • Dairy and egg products from outside approved countries
- • Fresh fruit, vegetables, and live plants
- • Seeds and soil
- • Products of endangered species (CITES)
- • Counterfeit or trademark-infringing goods
- • Firearms and weapons (strict controls)
Generally Permitted — Declare Correctly
- • Factory-packaged plant-based foods (sambal, kecap manis, krupuk, instant noodles)
- • Packaged coffee and tea
- • Skincare and cosmetics (reasonable quantities)
- • Batik and textiles
- • Herbal supplements (jamu) — check CFIA for specific ingredients
- • Electronics — declare value honestly
Declare the contents and value of your package accurately. CBSA inspects packages and cross-checks declarations. Every package at our Kendal warehouse is photo-verified before shipment — if you're unsure about your items, ask us before the box is sealed.
Personal Shopper for Canadian Customers
The most common complaint from Indonesians in Canada: Canadian-issued Visa and Mastercard are frequently declined by Tokopedia and Shopee. The issue is on the payment processing side — Indonesian platforms reject many foreign cards, and Canadian cards are no exception. A VPN doesn't fix the payment rejection.
The fix: IndoShip Personal Shopper. You send us the product link (or describe what you want), we purchase it with an Indonesian account and card, receive it at our Kendal warehouse, inspect it, and ship it to your address in Canada.
Personal Shopper fees:
- • Purchase fee: $4 per store (up to 3 items per store)
- • Currency conversion: 5% of the item price
- • Payment processing: 3% of the total purchase
- • Shipping Kendal → Canada: per the calculator
- • No hidden fees — see the breakdown before you confirm
Our customers include diaspora families in Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary, as well as students and professionals across the country. Ship to a house, apartment, or student address.
Tips to Save on Shipping to Canada
- 1.Consolidate your packages.
Shop from multiple Tokopedia and Shopee stores, gather everything at the Kendal warehouse, and ship as one box. The per-item shipping cost drops significantly on a long-haul route like Indonesia-Canada.
- 2.Declare value honestly.
CBSA regularly inspects packages from Southeast Asia. Undervaluing to avoid duty risks seizure and a penalty — the lost goods cost far more than the honest duty and tax would have. The CAD 20 threshold is low enough that almost every package triggers duty anyway.
- 3.Budget for provincial tax — it varies widely.
Alberta and the territories are GST-only (5%), making them the cheapest provinces for import tax. Ontario is 13% HST. The Atlantic provinces and Quebec are 15% or nearly 15%. If you have a choice of shipping address, the province matters.
- 4.Repack to cut volumetric weight.
Couriers charge by volumetric weight (L × W × H / 5000), not just actual weight. Our repack service strips oversized store packaging and right-sizes the box before shipment. On a long-haul route, even small weight savings add up.
- 5.Use Pos Indonesia EMS for non-urgent food shipments.
The 10–18 day window is longer than regional routes, but EMS from ~$46 for 1kg is significantly cheaper than express couriers (exact rates in the calculator). For a 3–5kg grocery box, the savings are meaningful.
