How to Ship a Package from Indonesia to Australia (2026 Guide)

Australia is close — shipping there is among the cheapest and fastest from Indonesia. But its border is the strictest in the world when it comes to food and organic materials. This guide is honest about both sides: the cost, the delivery time, GST, what you can and can't ship, plus what to do if your Australian card gets declined on Tokopedia. See our Australia shipping page for real-time rates and Personal Shopper service.

Estimated Shipping Cost to Australia (2026)

Because it's so close, Australia is one of the most affordable international routes from Indonesia. Shipping from our warehouse in Kendal starts at around $25 USD for 1kg — nearly half the cost of the US route.

What drives the final cost the most:

  • Weight:The fixed per-shipment costs get spread across a heavier package — one 5kg box is cheaper than five 1kg packages.
  • Contents:Items that trigger a biosecurity inspection (food, organic materials) don't add to the shipping cost, but they can add time — and a held item means lost money. An honest declaration from the start is the biggest saving on this route.

Don't guess: use our shipping calculator — real-time rates from several couriers for your weight and destination city, no signup required.

Delivery Time by Courier

A common estimate to Australia's major cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide): 5-10 days for express service.

ServiceDelivery Time (estimate)TrackingBest For
DHL Express5-7 daysReal-timeDocuments & urgent items
Economy2-3 weeksBasicClothes, books, bulky items

Biosecurity note: packages containing food or organic materials may take longer to inspect at the border. A complete, honest declaration makes the inspection far faster — it's the packages with suspicious declarations that get held the longest.

10% GST & Australian Import Duty

Australia's import tax rules are simple, but often misunderstood. There are essentially two components — and only one has a duty-free threshold:

10% GST — Applies to All Imports

Unlike the US ($800 tax-free) or South Korea ($150), Australia has no GST-free threshold — 10% GST applies to imported goods of any value. Treat the 10% GST as part of your total cost from the start, so there are no surprises.

Import Duty: Waived Below ~AUD 1,000

The good news: import duty is waived for shipments valued under roughly AUD 1,000 (~$650 USD). Almost every personal shipment — clothes, snacks, skincare, souvenirs — falls into this category. So for a typical package: 10% GST, no duty.

Above AUD 1,000: 5-10% Duty + GST

High-value shipments are charged consumer-goods import duty, generally 5-10% depending on the item type, plus 10% GST. Declare the value honestly — we always prepare complete declaration documents to keep the process smooth.

Indonesian-Origin Goods: 0% Duty Under IA-CEPA

Under the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA, in force since 5 July 2020), Australia eliminated all remaining tariffs on Indonesian-origin goods immediately. This means qualifying Indonesian products — batik, coffee, crafts, snacks, and more — enter Australia duty-free at any value, with only the 10% GST to budget for. (Under IA-CEPA, it is Indonesia that phased its tariffs on Australian goods over 5/10/15-year staging; Australia's elimination was immediate.) A Certificate of Origin may be required to claim the preference.

Biosecurity: Banned & Restricted Items

Australia protects its agriculture with the strictest border inspection in the world. This isn't a reason to be afraid of shipping — it's a reason to declare correctly. The rule of thumb:

Very High Risk — Avoid

  • • Meat & meat-derived products (shredded meat, jerky, packaged rendang)
  • • Dairy, eggs & their derivatives
  • • Fresh fruit, vegetables & plants
  • • Seeds, grains & whole spices not factory-packaged
  • • Homemade food without a manufacturer label
  • • Wood/rattan/bamboo products without special treatment
  • • Soil, sand & raw organic materials

Allowed with a Correct Declaration

  • • Factory-packaged dry foods with full labels
  • • Commercially packaged coffee & tea
  • • Packaged snacks & crackers (no meat content)
  • • Cosmetics/skincare in reasonable quantities
  • • Batik & textiles — usually no problem
  • • Crafts made from treated/finished wood
  • • Electronics with lithium batteries — special declaration

Not sure which category your item falls into? Every package at our warehouse is photo-verified for free before we ship — ask us before the box is sealed, rather than having it destroyed at the border.

Tips to Save on Shipping to Australia

  1. 1.
    Consolidate your packages.

Shop from several Tokopedia/Shopee stores, gather everything at the Kendal warehouse, and ship as one box — the per-item cost can drop by up to 60%.

  2. 2.
    Declare honestly from the start.

On the Australia route, the biggest cost isn't shipping — it's items held or destroyed because of a careless declaration. Our photo verification helps make sure the box contents match the declaration.

  3. 3.
    Repack to cut volumetric weight.

Couriers charge by volumetric weight, not just actual weight. Our repack service re-boxes oversized store packaging down to the right size.

  4. 4.
    Consider the economy option.

The short route means even the economy option arrives within 2-3 weeks. For clothes and non-urgent items, the savings are worth it.

  5. 5.
    Avoid the year-end peak.

November-December is peak volume (Christmas + the Australian summer holidays). For year-end gifts, ship by early November at the latest.

If Your Card Is Declined on Tokopedia/Shopee

The most common complaint from Indonesians in Australia: Tokopedia and Shopee reject credit/debit cards issued by Australian banks — CommBank, ANZ, Westpac, NAB, including virtual cards. A VPN doesn't fix it, because the rejection happens on the payment side, not the location.

The fix: IndoShip Personal Shopper. You just hand us the product link, we buy it with an Indonesian account & card, receive the package at our Kendal warehouse, then forward it to your address in Australia.

Personal Shopper fees:

  • • One all-in USD price — item, service and handling included
  • • Shipping Kendal → Australia: per the calculator
  • • No hidden fees — see your total before you confirm

Our customers are spread from Sydney to Perth — workers, students, and diaspora families. Ship to a house, apartment, or office — flexible.
