How to Ship a Package from Indonesia to Hong Kong (2026 Guide)

Hong Kong is one of the easiest destinations for shipping from Indonesia — it is a free port with zero customs duty and zero VAT on virtually all consumer goods. This post covers the honest numbers: shipping rates from $25, delivery times by courier, why Hong Kong's free-port status means you skip the customs math entirely, which Indonesian foods travel safely, and what to do when your Hong Kong bank card is declined on Tokopedia. See our Hong Kong shipping page for real-time rates and Personal Shopper service.

Why Hong Kong is a Unique IndoShip Destination

Hong Kong is home to approximately 180,000 people of Indonesian descent — primarily domestic workers whose employment contracts include mandated home leave to Indonesia. This creates a steady, high-volume flow of packages: workers returning from leave ship Indonesian goods back to Hong Kong, and families in Indonesia ship care packages to relatives working in Hong Kong.

The demand is real and specific. The most popular items shipped from Indonesia:

  • • Indonesian groceries (sambal, kecap manis, krupuk)
  • • Indonesian coffee (Gayo, Toraja)
  • • Batik and traditional textiles
  • • Skincare and beauty products
  • • Herbal and jamu products
  • • Indonesian snacks and instant noodles

Hong Kong has Indonesian grocery stores in Causeway Bay and Wan Chai — but selection is limited and prices are marked up. Direct import from Indonesia via IndoShip offers better variety, authenticity, and value, especially for larger shipments.

Delivery Time by Courier

Four couriers serve the Indonesia-to-Hong Kong route from our Kendal warehouse. Hong Kong is one of the fastest destinations due to short transit distance and efficient customs — express couriers can deliver in as little as 2 days.

CourierDelivery (estimate)From (1kg)Best For
Pos Indonesia EMS5–8 days~$25Food, personal care, budget shipments

Customs clearance note: Hong Kong customs clearance is among the fastest in the world — most non-dutiable packages clear within hours of arrival. Express couriers like DHL handle clearance on your behalf. Pos Indonesia EMS parcels are handed to Hongkong Post for last-mile delivery.

Hong Kong Customs — Free Port, No Duty, No VAT

Hong Kong is one of the world's few remaining free ports. This means the default customs rate for imported goods is zero — for both duty and tax. Unlike most destinations where you must calculate duty brackets and VAT percentages, shipping to Hong Kong removes the customs math entirely for general consumer goods.

Free Port — Zero Duty on General Goods

Under the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance (Cap. 109), Hong Kong imposes import duty on only four categories of goods: tobacco, liquor above 30% alcohol, methyl alcohol, and hydrocarbon oil. All other consumer goods — food, clothing, electronics, skincare, coffee, textiles, furniture — enter Hong Kong at 0% customs duty. There is no de-minimis threshold because there is nothing to exempt from: the default rate is zero.

No VAT, GST, or Sales Tax

Hong Kong does not impose a value-added tax (VAT), goods and services tax (GST), or any form of sales tax on imports. Unlike destinations such as the EU (where VAT applies from the first euro) or Australia (GST from the first dollar), Hong Kong packages incur zero tax liability on the recipient side. The shipping cost is your only international expense for non-dutiable goods.

The Four Dutiable Commodities — Know Before You Ship

If your package contains any of these four categories, Hong Kong customs will assess duty regardless of value:

  • • Tobacco and tobacco products
  • • Liquor and alcoholic beverages (above 30% ABV)
  • • Methyl alcohol
  • • Hydrocarbon oil

IndoShip does not ship dutiable commodities. If your package contains only general consumer goods — food, clothing, skincare, coffee, electronics — you can ignore this list entirely. Your package enters Hong Kong duty-free and tax-free.

No De-Minimis Threshold — Because None Is Needed

You may be accustomed to watching de-minimis thresholds for destinations like the US, EU, or Japan. Hong Kong has no de-minimis threshold — not because everything is taxed, but because the default rate is zero. Whether your declared value is $10 or $1,000, the customs outcome is the same for non-dutiable goods: duty-free, tax-free. Do not let anyone sell you a "Hong Kong customs clearance service" for general consumer goods — there is nothing to clear.

Prohibited & Restricted Items

Hong Kong customs is efficient and comparatively permissive, but certain categories are restricted or prohibited. The most relevant categories for Indonesian shipments:

High Risk — Avoid or Check First

  • • Dutiable commodities (tobacco, liquor, methyl alcohol, hydrocarbon oil)
  • • Fresh fruit, vegetables, and plants (may require phytosanitary certificate)
  • • Meat and meat-derived products (quarantine rules apply)
  • • Products of endangered species (CITES — applies to some traditional medicines)
  • • Counterfeit or trademark-infringing goods (strictly enforced)
  • • Radio transmitting equipment (requires licence)

Generally Permitted — Declare Correctly

  • • Factory-packaged foods (sambal, kecap manis, krupuk, instant noodles)
  • • Packaged coffee and tea
  • • Skincare and cosmetics (reasonable quantities)
  • • Batik and textiles
  • • Herbal supplements (jamu)
  • • Electronics — declare honestly

Declare the contents and value of your package accurately. Hong Kong customs cross-checks declarations and may inspect packages. Every package at our Kendal warehouse is photo-verified before shipment — if you're unsure about your items, ask us before the box is sealed.

Personal Shopper for Hong Kong Customers

The most common complaint from Indonesians in Hong Kong: Hong Kong-issued bank cards — including those linked to Octopus and major HK banks — are declined by Tokopedia and Shopee. The platform language (Bahasa Indonesia) is also a barrier. A VPN doesn't fix the payment rejection; the issue is on the payment processing side, not location.

The fix: IndoShip Personal Shopper. You send us the product link (or describe what you want), we purchase it with an Indonesian account and card, receive it at our Kendal warehouse, inspect it, and ship it to your address in Hong Kong.

Personal Shopper fees:

  • • Purchase fee: $4 per store (up to 3 items per store)
  • • Currency conversion: 5% of the item price
  • • Payment processing: 3% of the total purchase
  • • Shipping Kendal → Hong Kong: per the calculator
  • • No hidden fees — see the breakdown before you confirm

Our customers include Indonesian workers across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. We ship to residential addresses, employer addresses, and PO boxes.

Tips to Save on Shipping to Hong Kong

  1. 1.
    Consolidate your packages.

Shop from multiple Tokopedia and Shopee stores, gather everything at the Kendal warehouse, and ship as one box. The per-item shipping cost drops significantly — and since Hong Kong charges zero duty and zero VAT, there is no customs penalty for a higher-value consolidated package.

  2. 2.
Use Pos Indonesia EMS for routine shipments.

The 5–8 day window is adequate for packaged groceries and non-urgent items. EMS starts at ~$25 for 1kg vs. more for express (exact rates in the calculator) — meaningful savings on a 3–5kg grocery box. Hongkong Post handles last-mile delivery reliably.

  3. 3.
    Repack to cut volumetric weight.

Couriers charge by volumetric weight (L × W × H / 5000), not just actual weight. Our repack service strips oversized store packaging and right-sizes the box before shipment.

  4. 4.
    Avoid the four dutiable commodities.

Hong Kong's free-port benefit applies to everything except tobacco, liquor, methyl alcohol, and hydrocarbon oil. Keep your package free of these four categories and you pay zero customs — no exceptions, no thresholds, no surprises.

  5. 5.
    Ship during home-leave cycles.

Many Indonesian workers in Hong Kong take home leave during Ramadan/Lebaran and Christmas. Ship your purchases to Kendal before you travel — we'll consolidate and ship them to your Hong Kong address while you're still in Indonesia.
