Personal Shopper vs Forwarding vs Jastip: Which Should You Use?
Package Forwarding: You Buy, We Ship
Package forwarding is the base IndoShip service and the simplest model: you buy the items yourself on Indonesian marketplaces, have them sent to your free IndoShip warehouse address in Kendal, and the team receives, verifies, photographs, consolidates, and forwards them to your international address.
The key requirement: you need to be able to complete the purchase on the Indonesian marketplace. This means either having a payment method the seller accepts — some Tokopedia and Shopee sellers accept foreign cards, many do not — or using the Personal Shopper service for the purchase leg and forwarding for the shipping leg.
Once your packages arrive at the warehouse, the forwarding process is the same regardless of how you bought them. Each item is inspected and photographed so you can confirm it matches the listing. Multiple packages from different sellers are consolidated into a single shipment to reduce international postage. You choose your courier — DHL, FedEx, or economy — based on speed and budget, and the package ships with tracking.
Forwarding works best when you can pay the Indonesian seller directly. It keeps the purchase simple — you control the transaction, communicate with the seller, and manage any order changes or cancellations directly. IndoShip's role is logistics only: receive, verify, consolidate, and ship.
There is no service fee for pure forwarding beyond the shipping cost. The forwarding address is free to use, and the only charges are the international courier rate plus any optional warehouse services like extra packaging or extended storage. Forwarding is the most cost-effective path when your payment method works at Indonesian checkout.
Personal Shopper: We Buy for You
The Personal Shopper service — also called Buy-for-Me — exists for the common case where a foreign card is rejected at Indonesian checkout. Tokopedia, Shopee, TikTok Shop, and Blibli routinely decline cards issued outside Indonesia, leaving international buyers unable to complete a purchase even when they have found exactly what they want.
Under Personal Shopper, you send IndoShip the product link. The team purchases the item in Indonesian rupiah on your behalf, using a local payment method that the marketplace accepts. The item ships from the seller to the Kendal warehouse, where it goes through the same verification and photography step as a forwarding package. From there, it is forwarded to your international address via the courier you choose.
The Personal Shopper fee is transparent and fixed: a $4 flat service fee plus 5% currency conversion on the item cost and 3% payment processing. There are no hidden percentages, no markup on the item price, and no commitment until you approve the free quote. The quote shows the item cost, each fee component, and the total before you pay anything.
Example for a $35 item: the service fee is $4.00, the currency conversion fee is $1.75 (5% of $35), bringing the subtotal to $40.75. The payment processing fee is $1.26, for a customer total of $42.01. This is the complete cost for the purchase leg. Shipping is a separate charge, quoted and paid later once the package is weighed and measured at the warehouse.
Personal Shopper is the path for any purchase where your own card or payment method is not accepted at Indonesian checkout. It is also useful when you prefer not to manage the Indonesian-language checkout process, seller communication, or payment method setup yourself.
The service does not inflate the item price. IndoShip buys at the listed price and passes the item cost through at exactly what was paid. The only charges added are the stated service, currency conversion, and payment processing fees. The receipt from the marketplace is available on request.
Jastip: The Informal Option
Jastip — short for jasa titip, Indonesian for "entrusted service" — is the informal version of cross-border shopping. It works through personal networks: someone traveling from Indonesia to your country offers to carry items in their luggage for a fee, usually negotiated per item or per kilogram. Jastip operates on social media, messaging groups, and community forums rather than through a structured business.
The appeal of jastip is low cost and personal familiarity. Because the courier is a traveler rather than a logistics company, the fee is often lower than formal shipping, and delivery can be arranged in person. For urgent small items — a specific phone case, a particular snack, a document — jastip can be faster than any courier because it bypasses customs clearance entirely.
The limitations are significant. Jastip depends on someone happening to travel your route at the right time. Availability is unpredictable. The transaction has no formal recourse if the item is lost, damaged, or not as described — it is a personal arrangement, not a commercial service with tracking, insurance, or a dispute process. Scale is limited to what fits in luggage, and heavy or bulky items are usually out of scope. Customs declarations are at the traveler's discretion, which can create legal risk for both parties if items are not declared correctly.
Jastip works for small, informal purchases among people who already know and trust each other. It is not a reliable channel for regular shopping, commercial quantities, high-value items, or anything where you need proof of purchase, tracking, or delivery confirmation.
Which One When
The choice between forwarding, Personal Shopper, and jastip is not always exclusive — many orders use a combination.
Use forwarding alone when you can pay the Indonesian seller directly with your own card or payment method. This is the simplest and lowest-cost path because you pay only for international shipping, with no purchase-service fee. It works for buyers who have an Indonesian bank account, an accepted international card on a particular marketplace, or a local payment method set up.
Use Personal Shopper plus forwarding when your card is rejected at Indonesian checkout — which is the majority case for international buyers on Tokopedia, Shopee, and TikTok Shop. Personal Shopper handles the purchase; forwarding handles the shipping. These are separate charges: the purchase fee (item cost plus the $4 + 5% + 3% service fee) is paid when you approve the quote, and the shipping cost is paid later once the package is weighed and measured at the warehouse.
Use jastip for small, informal, urgent purchases where someone you know is traveling your route and you are comfortable with the informal nature of the arrangement. For anything commercial, trackable, insured, or recurring, forwarding and Personal Shopper are the appropriate tools.
A typical IndoShip order flow: a buyer finds a product on Tokopedia, tries their foreign card, it is declined, and they send the link for a Personal Shopper quote. IndoShip buys the item, it arrives at the warehouse, is photographed, and the buyer approves it. The buyer then chooses a courier and pays the shipping charge. The package ships with tracking. If the buyer later finds another product on Shopee that accepts their card, they buy it directly, send it to the same warehouse address, and IndoShip consolidates both packages into one shipment. This mixed flow — Personal Shopper for some items, forwarding for others, consolidated shipping for all — is how most regular buyers use the service.
How the Three Compare
At a glance, here is how forwarding, Personal Shopper, and jastip compare across the dimensions that matter when you are deciding how to get Indonesian products abroad.
Payment flexibility: forwarding requires a working payment method on the Indonesian marketplace; Personal Shopper handles the purchase for you and accepts international payment; jastip is a personal cash arrangement.
Cost structure: forwarding has no purchase-service fee — you pay shipping only; Personal Shopper adds a $4 service fee plus 5% currency conversion and 3% payment processing on the item, plus shipping; jastip fees are negotiated per item or per kilogram with no standard rate.
Tracking and recourse: forwarding and Personal Shopper provide tracking numbers, warehouse verification photos, and a formal support channel; jastip offers none of these — it is a personal arrangement.
Scale: forwarding and Personal Shopper handle everything from a single small parcel to consolidated freight shipments of furniture; jastip is limited to what fits in a traveler's luggage.
Reliability: forwarding and Personal Shopper operate on a consistent, repeatable process with documented steps; jastip depends on traveler availability and is inherently ad hoc.
For most buyers most of the time, forwarding plus Personal Shopper covers the full purchase-and-ship cycle with tracking, verification, and a paper trail. Jastip fills a narrow niche for small, informal, time-sensitive purchases between people who already know each other.
